In October of this year(2008) My friend that I worked with passed away from a heart attack at the age of 43. I took it really hard partially because in my 35 years of living I have never know anyone close to me that died of a heart attack. I was torn because he was my friend and I talked to him the night before and he seem fine. I would never have thought he would have died from a heart attack simply because of my naive view of what a heart attack candidate would be a fat person that drinks and smokes allot and who is in their late 50's. I was so wrong. My friend was not overweight nor did he smoke or drink and he was a security guard which required him to do a physical every 3 months.

The more I think about the fact he died of a heart attack the more scared I got. He was just 8 years older than me I thought I could be next. I knew nothing about heart attacks and what really caused them, sure I knew that it resulted from having your blood flow to the heart being blocked by cholesterol, but what causes the build up ? and if it's built up already how could I reduce my cholesterol ?

My fear drove research and created this site for people like me who wanted more answers before it was too late. Even though I think I'm fairly healthy and My family has no history of heart attacks I am not taking any chances. On this site we will review Natural Alternatives to reduce your cholesterol, Drugs you can take to do it as well as things to have around the house that my save your life.

What is a Heart Attack ?

Wikipedia quotes it has " Myocardial infarction (MI or AMI for acute myocardial infarction), also known as a heart attack, occurs when the blood supply to part of the heart is interrupted. This is most commonly due to occlusion (blockage) of a coronary artery following the rupture of a vulnerable atherosclerotic plaque, which is an unstable collection of lipids (like cholesterol) and white blood cells (especially macrophages) in the wall of an artery. The resulting ischemia (restriction in blood supply) and oxygen shortage, if left untreated for a sufficient period, can cause damage and/or death (infarction) of heart muscle tissue (myocardium). "

Generally you get 2-3 minor heart attacks that you survive before you get a major one that kills you. My friend before he passed away would always be drinking tea at night and once I saw him rub his chest. When I asked if he was ok he said he had gas. Most people mistake minor heart attacks for heart burn a common condition cause by gastric acid and the symptoms are similar to a heart attack like pains in the middle of the chest. I wonder now if he was having minor heart attacks and thought that it was just gas because he died of a sudden massive heart attack. I guess I will never really know.

It's always better to be safe than sorry as they say and if you get some kind of sharp pain in your chest I would strongly suggest you get it checked out. The video below goes more into detail on the symptoms of a heart attack and what causes it.

So what can lead to heart attack ? Anything that will clog up your arteries like smoking and eating fatty foods example pork. Conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes can also lead to a heart attack. What can you do to protect yourself ? Eat right and exercise and get regular check ups with your doctor.

If you have a history of heart disease in your family you are naturally at a greater risk and should be more vigilant in living a healthy lifestyle. Don't think that because you are young now that you don't need to worry about a heart at your age. During my research I have found that people in their twenties have heart problems and for a disease that generally usually affects men more and more women are getting the heart attacks too.
